After a difficult period of time recently in the online business education industry, Dean Holland gives his thoughts on how to start and build an online business from scratch. He also points to a specific resource designed to free up affiliate marketing beginners to have fun and enjoy building their online businesses…

“Good morning my friend, I hope you’re well. It’s Dean here of course. This has been a rather serious time hasn’t it. So let’s lighten the mood here, in today’s episode of The Drive.

Companies being closed, FTC, widespread panic in the industry, everybody losing out. And yeah, I’m not gonna try and sugar coat that there’s obviously major shockwaves going through the industry. With many people potentially losing out on a lot right now. It’s a very scary situation for a lot of people.

But… I don’t want to focus on that right now. You see, we’ve focused on that quite a bit recently, and I know there’s a lot of people facing scary times. However I want to just switch gears for a moment.

I want to talk about the other side of what people don’t tend to focus on enough. Because… And I know what it’s like, right? I’ve been there, when you’re trying desperately to start and build an online business and things aren’t going your way.

Stuff’s going wrong! You’re spending money, losing money, trying things, failing at things. Y’know, buying and trying everything that comes across your path and into your email inbox.

And it’s frustrating, and overwhelming, and it’s tiring. Everyone around you is doubting you, and all you want to do is silence them. But you can’t, because nothing’s going your way, right?

It Should Be Fun To Start And Build An Online Business

But I want to just switch to the other side. I want to remind you that building a business should be fun. It’s simple – the work you have to actually do. Don’t mistake me though – it’s not easy, right?

It’s simple in terms of the things that you have to learn and do to start and build an online business. Meaning it’s not like becoming a brain surgeon is it? Let’s be honest… It’s not like you’ve got to spend the next 5-10 years stuck in college or university getting degrees with a doctor watching over your shoulder.

It’s not like that, right? We’re literally at home at our computer or wherever we choose to work from, and we’re trying to learn and implement in a few key areas to be successful, to get results.

I think where the frustration starts to come in is that people don’t know what those areas are. If I look back on myself, I can remember it felt like there was a million and one things to do. I was a “busy fool”. I was working and grinding at the computer hours and hours each day, not sleeping, juggling work life, computer life, and family life.

And it was tiring, because I just didn’t have a plan. I didn’t have direction, didn’t have help, didn’t have support. And it’s tough, tough, tough, in that sense.

But I’ll tell you that it’s worth it. It is hard work, but it is worth it.

Are You Looking For Someone To Tell You That It Can Be Push-Button Easy?

And there’s that good old transparency that the FTC are looking for… You’re looking for someone to tell you that it can be push-button easy. And this is one of the problems in this darn industry. People don’t want to hear that it’s hard work to start and build an online business.

Everybody blames the product creators, but let’s for a moment think about what people are looking for. People don’t want to hear that it’s hard work to build an online business from scratch. That it takes time, that it takes energy, that it takes hard work and effort, and it takes money.

No one wants to hear that, right? So for a product creator selling their own products, it gets tougher and tougher. Because people don’t want to hear that. That’s not what they want to buy. I mean, who wants to buy something that’s hard work?

If I said to you, “I’ve got something you can buy. It can absolutely change your life. It’s gonna be $3,000. I’ll do a lot of the work for you. But then you’re gonna have to put in some hard work, and you’re gonna have to spend 6/12/18 months working hard and focusing. Not doing anything else, not buying other products, not being pulled in different directions. Only doing this, and working hard to follow my directions.”

I know a few might buy, but many are going to be put off. But that’s one of the changes that we made here at Internet Profits over the last 12 months… Is actually to only attract those that are willing and wanting to work for the results.

How To Make It Fun

But let me come back to my original point of today’s Drive… Building a business can and should be fun. Should be enjoyable. Because you’re learning new skills, you’re developing yourself, you’re growing.

It’s a process. And a process that, if you are willing to put in that work, can absolutely pay off and change your life. And that is the truth.

The way to make it more fun is to actually invest in yourself, and get the help as early on as you can. Don’t let it reach the stage of becoming not fun. Don’t let it get to the stage where you despise sitting at the computer because you’re so overwhelmed and frustrated every day.

“So what’s a good starting point then, Dean? Tell me!”

Well if you are looking to follow the path that I did, which is to… First learn a few key skills, where you don’t have to spend years creating your own products, or learning to get to that stage and becoming an expert. Then you should start off looking at affiliate marketing, right?

Traditional Affiliate Marketing Is Dead

Now affiliate marketing has completely changed over the years. It’s not the same as it used to be. Traditional affiliate marketing no longer works. And I touched on this a bit the other day.

But without going into it, I’ve got a free, short read. It’s like 20 pages. I call it a playbook for affiliate marketers. It shows you exactly what to do. Just cover shipping and handling. Grab a copy of that now…

Anyway that’s not what this is about. But do grab that playbook afterwards here. Once you do that, then you can focus on learning those key skills to start and build an online business.

Now to be transparent with you, my end goal is not for you to just get that book and it changes your life. The goal of that book is that it opens your eyes and shows you the truth. Then my ultimate next step for you is that I want you to become one of our Certified Partners, okay?

Now there’s a higher investment here, when you become one of our Certified Partners. Then I’m going to provide you with done-for-you products, funnels, websites, and everything that you need.

Start And Build An Online Business From Scratch For A Full Time Sustainable Income

Now my goal there – not saying this is the result – but my goal for you, okay… Again, keep it FTC happy, right? I’m not promising or guaranteeing anything at all. But my personal goal for people is that you start and build an online business that can provide you with a full time, sustainable income.

Meaning that it can get you out of your job, or supplement that pension if that’s where you’re at in life. Now that, again, is not even my end goal. I’ll be honest, right? What I would then love to happen is for you to say, “Well, now I’m doing this successfully, I’d love to learn how to create my own products using my own knowledge and expertise now, and create my own funnel, Dean.”

Then we’re going to have a program for that, and we’re going to move you into a program called Expansion. And that’s going to then allow you to create your own products, build your own funnels, and use those skills you’ve already got, and the money you’re now earning when you complete the previous stage… To then be able to grow your business further by scaling it with your own products.

And then that’s STILL not the end goal. Because what I then want to happen, is for you to join a high-level ‘Mastermind’ where you become one of just a hundred people that we’re going to invite into our Mastermind. And then we can continue working together.

That’s the path, right? So business should be fun. And it all begins – if you want to get on that path – when you grab my playbook for affiliate marketers, alright? Let’s lighten the mood, let’s get you on track, let’s make it happen.

Following along from the MOBE FTC shutdown reaction post from last month, here’s Dean Holland’s MOBE FTC update, and some further advice on how to move forward by building your own assets in your online business…

“Good morning everybody. Dean here of course. Welcome to today’s episode of The Drive, taking place actually at Internet Profits HQ here in our video studio.

I messed up! I went to do today’s Drive in the car and I was talking to myself. Got to the office and I hadn’t pressed the darn record button! So I’ve popped into the video studio. We’ve just been working on a few things – setting up and completing our live streaming capabilities.

Now I want to just talk about something… A few days ago I did a video about MOBE – that it looked like they’ve been pulled down. It looked like, at that time, they had been pulled down by the FTC and shut down… MOBE FTC update… That has now been confirmed.

MOBE FTC Update

If you go to their website, the receivers letter is up there, and there’s all kinds of legal stuff that now will ensue. Reading some of the stuff, it looks like a lot has been happening. I’m sure MOBE will be fighting this, and they’re gonna be having their day in court, so we’ll see what happens.

And what I would say is that I feel, y’know above all, sorry for the people that are directly impacted who have just invested and spent money. I can’t speak as to whether MOBE has done anything wrong.

I’ve seen some of their products. I’ve seen great content and things from Matt Lloyd in the past. And so everything looked good to me. But I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, right? So I can’t speak to that.

But what I can say is – that there will be a lot of people obviously who can no longer access the things that they’ve paid for. And some customers have spent thousands, even tens and tens of thousands – and now have zero access. Some people even paid, like, days before it was all shut off. So what an absolute mess!

I think right now, there’s a lot of shock and fear in the industry. Y’know like…

“Why Do All These Companies Keep Being Shut Down?”

Well I want to give you… Obviously let me just throw a disclaimer up here… I’m not a lawyer, not a legal representative of any kind, in any way shape or form. These are all just my own personal views and opinions. So make sure you do all your own research.

But what I can speak of is just some, like, common sense stuff that we all need to make sure we adhere to. So for example, not making guarantees or promises of outcomes, right? You cannot legally, morally, or ethically guarantee an outcome.

It’s even risky territory to even hint at what’s possible. Because it could be decided that you’re making it suggestive that everybody can do this. And typically not everybody’s going to be able to do something. So you’ve got to make sure you’re not making promises or guarantees of income.

Testimonials… Y’know, it’s a big area. And you know what’s crazy? When you actually understand the laws and you look into these things, you’ll realize that probably nearly all companies are violating some laws to some degree.

Look at the weight loss industry. They show these transformations. Well, is it true? Is it true and correct that the average person is experiencing these transformations?

In the make money online space – is it true, when you show these testimonials, that the average person is getting this result?

Is The Average Person Getting Results As Advertised?

Even when you have software, and tools, and solutions, and services… When you show something like, “Oh look at this amazing website that one of our clients has got and is making all these sales.” Is that a typical result?

Y’know for example, even with Shopify. Chris on the team here was actually telling me earlier that something like 95% of Shopify’s revenue… And I might be off with the percentages… But 95% of Shopify is revenue was coming from people that weren’t actually doing anything with their store.

Kind of like gym memberships! I bet a lot of gyms make most of their money from people that don’t even go, right?

And when you look at all these things, there are some widespread practices a lot of people are doing, that actually the FTC would deem as wrong.

So make sure you’re not making promises, or guarantees of results and outcomes. Be careful with using any kind of testimonies or anything like that. Make sure you’re being transparent – on what your customer is entitled to, what ensues after purchase, and what your product requires them to do.

If you’re selling something – but then, in order to use it… So, say if you’re selling a widget for a website. And in order for somebody to use that widget, they actually need to make sure that they’ve got other things. Well, they need to know from you that they’ve also got to have these other things. So transparency is a big thing.

And we could go on and on. But just use your common sense… “Am I saying stuff on my website that could potentially be misleading, or misrepresenting, or making unsubstantiated claims, making promises or guarantees of outcomes?” So anyway, do your own research.

MOBE Won’t Be The Last Online Business Education Company To Be Shut Down

But I just wanted to share a few little tips that could help. Because at the end of the day, MOBE isn’t the first company to be shut down. And it sure as heck won’t be the last.

I mean we’ve seen companies come and go in this market space over the last few years alone. Some big ones, y’know. There was Empower Network – gone, now bankrupt, dead. Digital Altitude sued by the FTC – currently still non-existent. Now MOBE. And so if you look at these companies, there are patterns. People were doing the same stuff.

And if you are one of the unfortunate people that has lost out because of this currently… I mean, who knows? MOBE might be able to win their case. I don’t know at this stage.

But as I said in my video the other day, what you’ve got to do is protect yourself and learn from this experience. Make sure that you are building your own assets.

You can utilise other people’s products and marketing systems, y’know – affiliate marketing and network marketing. But build your own assets, your own audiences, your own email list. Don’t just send your traffic direct to other companies.

In Network Marketing Or Affiliate Marketing, Build And Control Your Own Assets

If you’re in network marketing, affiliate marketing or any of that kind of stuff, build your own assets. Build your own email list, control your own website. Have your own blog, your own fan pages, your own ad accounts, your own lists, your own autoresponder.

Have control of as much as you can control. Because if something happens to go wrong for a company you’re promoting, for example, and you put 100% of your work over there… So you weren’t building your own list, you didn’t have your own blog, you didn’t have your own website… Then you can end up like a lot of people are now – and it’s it’s terrifying in that sense.

So I have the utmost sympathy for everyone who has been impacted by this. The reality is now that it is confirmed, it is fact, and you just have to really take this and learn from it. And I know that’s not nice to hear, because some people really are losing a lot right now. And I sympathize with you, with the utmost respect.

But I can’t do anything for you, other than to say, learn from this. Hopefully there’s a positive resolution and you don’t lose out. Even if this does have a positive resolution, learn from this and adapt. Don’t allow yourself to be in this situation again.

In this weekly recap, Dean talks about a way to boost affiliate marketing commissions or increase the sales of any product online. This basically hinges around the customer’s perceptions of value around aspects of the offer that you’re making to them…

“Good day. How are you doing? As you can see, it is the end of the week, which means I’m here in Internet profits HQ. And I want to give you a quick recap of the week behind the scenes here at Internet Profits…

What we’ve been working on, what are the things that we’ve been doing? What have been the main priorities, the progress, the lessons and the learnings, and all kinds of good stuff behind the scenes here?

Two main, big things happened this week, in terms of myself. Last week I was actually away in Greece, and we’ve got plenty of footage over the next week to share with you about that. So I look forward to sharing some of my experiences with you guys.

But now that I’ve been back, I’ve been catching up on some stuff…

Firstly, this week we actually launched a small, intimate VIP coaching group that was specifically only available for people that are already our Certified Partners. So we offered this to a small group of people. And that actually began this week.

New VIP One-On-One Coaching Group

So how it all kicked off was – we held these group sessions, but everybody got 30 minutes one-on-one time with me. And the thing that I did – the structure that I used – is something that you could probably benefit from in your business as well, if you approach things in this way.

In that 30 minutes, first of all I basically got a complete rundown of where they’re at right now, what their plans are, what their ideas are, strategies, results, or whatever. Whatever was going on. A complete deep-dive into where they are in their business.

Then in the remaining time that we had left… So that took maybe like 15 to 20 minutes let’s just say for each person… Then in the 10 minutes that was left, I gave some immediate, actionable advice that they could go and do – and spend the next few days doing – to see the biggest, most significant progress.

I don’t know about you, but it’s easy to feel like there are a million and one things to focus on. Like, there’s just so many things to do, so many things to think about and focus on. And because of that, we can become almost paralyzed in not moving forwards. You know what I mean?

It’s kind of like you get stuck feeling busy and acting busy. But actually, if you look at where you’re going – are the key areas of your business are moving forwards? The answer is a lot of the times, “Not really.”

And so that’s the big, big takeaway from that – and was what everybody was seeing and learning from, in that environment. Focus on the one or two things that, if you get done this next week is going to have the biggest impact on your income and your business.

So that was a big thing. Another big area that I’ve been focused on this week, which I’m so excited to get out there is…

We Are Working On A Huge, Huge Webinar System And Campaign

When I say huge, I’m literally talking like – we intend to make 10 plus million dollars over the next 12 months with this campaign.

And so we’re putting a lot of work in behind the scenes. We have recruited the services of an awesome copywriter, who’s going to assist with the the crafting of the campaign, the registration campaign, the replay follow-up campaign, He’s gonna hopefully be starting in the next week or so.

I personally been really optimizing and working on the actual presentation. This is a presentation that we took from the last couple of years. It’s something that’s already generated millions of dollars in sales. And we’ve been improving on it, making it even better.

That’s why we kind of just shut the doors to any affiliates or joint venture partners with it, and we’ve been working on it.

If you don’t know, I’m also in Russell Brunson’s Inner Circle Mastermind group. So I’ve actually had the great fortune of unquestionably probably one of the best webinar sales people in the industry, which is Russell Brunson, consulting with and reviewing and advising on the presentation itself. The hooks, the offer, and all this kind of good stuff.

And we’re in a position right now where, obviously we’ve got to run this again – this latest version. But it is killer! I don’t believe there are many offers out there that are as strong (and actually deliver the results to those who purchase it) as what we have here. I truly, wholeheartedly believe that.

Boost Affiliate Marketing Commissions By Making Your Offer More Valuable

And I think that’s one of big things that I want to just share here as well… If you’re not seeing the results that you’d like in your business. Or if you have an audience already and they’re not buying. Then you need to strengthen your offer. You need to make it more valuable.

You see, whenever anyone’s thinking about buying anything – at least this is how I feel about it, and and how I look at our customers.

Imagine you’ve got a scale, and you’ve got the pivot in the middle. On the left hand side you’ve got the value (product) that you’re offering, then on the right hand side is the value (money) you’re asking them to give you. So imagine you’ve got this pivotable scale – the value you’re offering on the left, the value you’re asking in return on the right.

If people aren’t buying, then often it’s because… If they already have a relationship with you – if you’re building and nurturing your audience, but they’re still not buying… Often it’s because the scale is like this… They feel the value (on the right) that you’re asking them to give you, outweighs the value (on the left) they’ll receive in exchange.

Our job as marketers is to enter a market, make them an offer so good that the scale is heavily tipped down to the left… Where it’s like, up here on the right is the (small) value you’re asking from them. And down here on the left is the perceived (large) value of everything that they’re actually being offered and receiving.

When you tip that scale so much, you have a no-brainer offer on your hands. And one of the best things that anyone can ever do to increase conversions and boost affiliate marketing commissions, is to strengthen their offer.

Way To Boost Affiliate Marketing Commissions

Now what does this mean if you don’t actually control the offer? If you are an affiliate for example? What can you do in that sense when you don’t control the offer? You’re sending traffic to an offer, and you can’t control the actual offer… Obviously assuming that what you’re promoting is a good, solid product. Then what can you do?

Well you can… Y’know, my background was always in affiliate marketing. And I’d always do things like strengthen the offer myself. So I could offer an incentive, I could offer a bonus, in order to boost affiliate marketing commissions.

Early on, very early on, I would offer people like a 10-minute call with me on skype to discuss how I’d started my blog. Or if I had created something, I would give them free access to it, if they purchased the affiliate offer.

So just always think about any offers you’re making, whether yours or an affiliate offer… Imagine that scale with the value you’re offering on the left, and the value you’re asking for on the right. Tip that scale to the left, and you will always have more success in your business.

So that’s kind of my big takeaway for you today. Obviously there’s tons of stuff happening. The team and I are always busy. We’ve pushed out some amazing things this week as well.

Louie and Glenn, a part of the team, they have created and launched to our Certified Partners, six or seven new traffic generation trainings this week. So we’re always delivering value to our clients and Partners.

We are investigating a couple of new avenues for front-end offers, and the strengthening of those offers (referring to what I just said above). And so I look forward to being able to share more of that as time goes on.

So with that said. That’s kind of a brief recap of the week. I’ve been mainly focused on that webinar to be honest. So that’s why there’s not tons of nitty-gritty stuff to share with you. It’s mainly been all about the webinar.

Not getting results with your content marketing efforts? No one responding to your ads or blog/video content? Here are some personal unique selling proposition examples, which may reveal why you’re not yet seeing the success you deserve in your business…

“What is happening? How are you doing? Good morning, of course. In the new Range Rover, on the way to Internet Profits HQ on this fine morning.

Busy day of coaching today. I’ve actually started a new 12 month, year long coaching. I only opened it up to a small number of people just recently.

The way in which that program begins is that I have a 30 minute session with each individual, as a part of the group. So they have 30 minutes one-on-one time with me on the webinar.

And everyone else is welcome to listen in if they want to, whilst I find out more about where that person’s at. What they’re currently doing and any sticking points right now. And give them immediate implementable advice.

That started yesterday. And today’s the second day of that. We’ll round everybody up today in that.

#1 Problem When Starting Content Marketing For Beginners

I want to share with you something that came out multiple times yesterday, in speaking with different people about where they’re at in their business. This is in relation to the content they create and how they create it.

Now this is applicable whether it’s content that you’re just producing, say, for your blog, or for a YouTube channel, or for social media. This is likewise applicable if you’re creating content for advertising. Like, paid ads on Facebook and other platforms. And I want you to think about this as well.

You see, a very common issue many people face is feeling like they don’t have a lot of uniqueness or value to give, that could exceed or be more valuable to the marketplace than other people.

And this especially happens – and I know this happened to me a long time ago – when you’re in the early stages of your business. It is a common theme or feeling for you to think, “Well I’m not really getting anywhere right now. I don’t have any results to speak of just yet. So why would anyone listen to me?”

Y’know, because there are others online – there are many people who are now getting great results. And when you are not yet there, and you compare yourself to others who are getting results… You can almost put yourself into a ‘shell’ and feel like, “I’m not getting results. So why would anyone listen to me? What could I possibly say that would be worth anyone listening to?”

And so, because of that feeling, you end up not actually producing anything. Not pushing yourself to make that first video, to place that paid ad, or to just put yourself out there online – because of those feelings and fears.

Unique Selling Proposition Examples From Clients

When I was speaking to multiple people yesterday, who are in the earlier stages, the same thing kept coming out. I was always able to identify an area for them that is their uniqueness, and their entry point for their messaging to start conveying… I’ll give you a couple of these unique selling proposition examples…

There was one lady I spoke with yesterday who is currently in a full time job, like most people are. Probably everyone pretty much is that’s starting a business. Most people are in a job or are retired.

But this lady was in a job, in a particular employment position whereby she felt she was unable at this stage to get herself on video, actually on camera. Because that would then mean she would have to notify her employer, and that may not be a good idea at this stage.

So she saw that potentially as a negative: “Well, I can’t get on video. So is that going to be a drawback? Because everyone tells me you have to get on video because that’s how you build trust.”

And yeah, although there’s aspects to that which are correct. Y’know, getting on video can build a connection and let people see you and know you’re real. But that doesn’t mean you have to.

So actually, we were able to spin that unique selling proposition example in a way that made her uniqueness.

How To Spin A Personal Unique Selling Proposition

For example, I said “Well, rather than hide from that and not discuss it, and just be this person that seemingly isn’t showing themselves, putting that potential opportunity of doubt into the viewers and marketplace…”

And have them say, “Why does she never show herself? What has she got to hide?” Instead, actually take it on, and say…

“Look, I’m building my business in a position where I’m still employed full time. I’m in a certain type of job, and if I were to get on camera it may cause me issues with my employment. And I’m not yet at the stage where I’m able to leave that job to run my business full time. And so I have to build a business without getting on camera and doing a lot of the conventional stuff that everyone tells us that we need to do.”

You see, now all of a sudden a negative becomes a positive. And I’ll give you one more unique selling proposition example…

There was a guy I spoke with yesterday, Daniel. He’s getting some results in his business. But his Facebook advertising is not quite working out for him – not quite seeing the results. There were certain areas of his advertising which we identified, that just weren’t working.

Facebook Ad Example Of A Unique Selling Proposition

And so, we were looking at his Facebook ads – what he was doing, and how he was doing it. But something he said on the call that wasn’t even intended to be anything…

He said, “Dean, just to let you know, I intended to have my two kids asleep by now. But they’re still awake, so I’m hoping they don’t interrupt us on the call. But there is a chance you’ll hear a bit of noise in the background. So, apologies if that happens.”

Anyway, that was just said. We got into the call, looking at all his stuff, talking things through. Then all of a sudden it struck me…

I said, “Looking at all of your ads that aren’t getting a response or much happening in terms of actions… I’m not seeing anything of yourself, your uniqueness, your personal circumstance – you, your life, your realness.”

And as we got into it, I said, “Well, do you have any pictures of you and your family, your partner, your children?” And he showed me this picture, and I said, “Ah, fantastic!”

Then he said, “Actually, I did test this image with an ad.” So I had a look at it, and that Facebook ad did have a good clickthrough rate, but the post (landing page) I didn’t feel was any ‘story’. It was just a quick post like, “Are you an affiliate marketer? Not getting results? Click here and grab this, or check this out.”

Unique Selling Proposition Example With Content Marketing Storytelling

So I said, “What you need is… What we should be trying out here, is a story. What if you were to capture some images and some video of where you’re trying to work, and your kids are climbing all over you?”

He laughed and said, “Oh I’ve actually got some images. I was on my computer and I’ve got my daughter hanging round my neck, trying to pull me away to play.”

And I said, “This is your uniqueness, this is your angle.” Not a uniqueness in the sense of, no one else is doing this. But, “This is your way in to connect with a certain slice – a small slice of a big pie of a marketplace.”

Because there are tons of other people who want to build a business, who have children and struggle between that balance… “I need to build a business. I’m going out to work, coming home, sitting at the computer, but my children need me as well, and I’m building all of this for my kids, but I’m stuck…”

I said, “If you can use that aspect of your life to attract people, you’re going to have a lot more success.”

Your Day To Day Life Is Your Path To Prosperity

So my message for you today is… No matter where you’re at in your business… Your realness, your day to day life, your existence, your every day being, and what happens in your life… That is your path to prosperity. “I want to give you a message of motivation to change your life this morning. You see, I think one of the biggest problems that people often face is either themselves, or the external influences that they allow to affect them.

And this is especially something that’s pretty common when you’re starting out looking to grow an online business as an affiliate marketer, say. Or y’know, whatever online business you’re starting. You will come up against ‘barriers’ let’s just say.

I can take you back to a point in time – 2008. I’d been trying to make money online and build an online business for four years. I hadn’t gotten anywhere. And when I began that journey…

When I First Discovered Affiliate Marketing, I Was So Excited

…that I would tell everyone about it: “Oh my gosh! I’ve discovered this thing that’s gonna change my life – it’s called affiliate marketing. And you can make money online, and I’m gonna figure out how to do it, and then I’m gonna tell everyone else how to do it… You should do it too!”

And I would tell everyone, and they would be like, “Oh really? Okay, ho hum.” And kind of like laugh almost like, “Okay, yeah right.” Additionally I would also be greeted with things like, “All that stuff’s not true, Dean. Don’t believe any of that. That’s all lies and scams. Don’t be foolish enough to believe any of that.”

But I believed it. I believed there was something there. I saw lots of proof, saw lots of evidence online – people doing it. And so I kept going.

And as time went on, the days turned into weeks, the weeks turned into months, and the months turned into years…. People would be asking, but now in sort of a mocking way, like…

“Oh, how’s that internet stuff going Dean?” Y’know, almost looking at each other – when I was in my full-time job, for example – people would be looking at each other when we’d be stood around having lunch. You could see when…

People Are Talking About You, And Laughing At You Behind Your Back

But the problem was that, because I couldn’t figure it out, because I wasn’t getting any results, I had nothing to throw back in their face. And so I remember this feeling where I just started getting quieter, and quieter, and quieter about it – because I had nothing positive to share.

In fact, to be honest… By my mid 20’s, at the end of 2008, I was in over sixty thousand dollars of debt. Five credit cards, all but one of them maxed out. I had two sizeable bank loans. And basically, in my mid twenties, facing bankruptcy.

But because I was so ashamed of what I done, nobody knew. So I was carrying on like, “Oh, y’know, that stuff’s going okay. I’ll figure it out soon.” And that’s all I kept saying… “I’ll figure it out soon.” I didn’t let anyone know that I’d got myself into a hell hole of debt.

Here’s one of the things I can learn and look back on now. Because I’m not just talking about friends and colleagues. I’m talking about family who would be trying to tell me to stop. People that love me, people that care about me, telling me it’s nonsense…

That I’m being fooled. It doesn’t exist. It’s scams, lies, cheats. I’m being duped and tricked, and I’m believing it all, and I’m foolish, and I should stop and focus on my job. Focus on a career, focus on climbing the corporate ladder.

And I can tell you now looking back, that the people that truly do care about you… The reason they kind of seemingly want to stand in your way and hold you back and stop you…

It’s Not Because They Don’t Want You To Succeed

…It’s not because they don’t love you or care… It’s that, for most people, that’s their mechanism of protection.

They want to protect you from the failures, protect you from losing, protect you from the pain. And so they’ll try and hold you back. Because, more often than not, people in their lifetimes – most people throughout their lifetimes – have tried to accomplish something, and they’ve experienced pain, because it’s perhaps not worked out.

And so when you have elders in your life, or people in your life, or influencers in your life that care about you. They want to protect you from that pain. And their way of doing that is to try and – what you feel like, and what it seems like… “They’re trying to hold me back and stop me.”

“Why don’t they believe in me?” You might think. “Why don’t they care about me enough to believe in me? Why aren’t they supporting me?” You’ll probably have those feelings. “Why aren’t they being supportive? Why are they trying to hold me back? Why are they doing this? I thought they loved me.”

Motivation To Change Your Life And Overcome Obstacles To Your Success

And you’ll think all these thoughts, when the truth is these people DO love you. That’s just their mechanism of protection.

But I want you to know one thing above all. You should believe in yourself, and listen to your own gut instinct. You believe in you. Believe in what you’re doing. You KNOW that you can live a better life, that you can provide more, that you can accomplish more, overcome obstacles to success, and find the motivation to change your life for the better.

The key is to find that person who can steer you there. Someone that’s doing, or has done what you want to do. Learn from them. Listen to them. That’s going to take an investment of time and money to do so. But it is absolutely imperative you do that.

Because if you ever want shut up those doubters, and prove to those around you, that you not only CAN do this, but you ARE doing this. Then it’s imperative you get the right help, the right advice, the right support, the right systems, the right tools… And you work on those every single day.

I Can Tell You There’s No Better Feeling…

…than when those people that used to laugh at you and tell you it’s not possible and that you’re a fool… There’s no better feeling when those people start coming to you saying, “Oh you did it. How’s it done? Is it something I could do?”

There’s no better feeling than those that love you and wanted to protect you, say, “I’m proud of you. You you did it. You stuck at it, and I’m so proud that you’ve turned it around.” No better feeling. (No better motivation to change your life.) So believe in yourself and make it happen.

The traditional affiliate marketing strategy from ten years ago is no longer as profitable with paid traffic as it once was. Dean reveals here what’s happened to the affiliate marketing industry over recent years, and lays out the blueprint for the best affiliate marketing tactic you need today…

“Hey, hey, hey! Good morning my friend. Dean here of course, just on the way to Internet Profits HQ.

I just want to share a quick, short message. More of a tactical thing y’know. Sometimes I talk about what we’re up to, sometimes I talk about motivation and all kinds of stuff here on The Drive.

But today… I’ve gone through everything meticulously recently. Like, what did I do? How did I do it? What does it take to build a business?

And I’m not gonna talk about mindset and that stuff today. Even though, to be honest, that’s probably the biggest differentiator between those that succeed and those that don’t. But anyway, we’ll push that to one side and talk affiliate marketing tactics.

Looking back, I used to think, “If only I could get more traffic… Then all my problems would be solved as an affiliate marketer.” That’s what I used to think was the best affiliate marketing tactic.

But the truth is… Y’know, when you look at it… If you think that, I want to give you a bit of a wake up call. I want you to think about something…

There Is So Much Traffic On The Internet!

It is RIDICULOUS. There are billions of people on Facebook alone. That’s one platform – just one platform, right? You only need one platform. Think about this for a second.

Let’s say you only… Imagine you eradicated all other platforms, and you only have Facebook. There is still more than enough traffic there for you to have monumental success.

Or let’s even draw that back a bit. Let’s not even talk about monumental success. You could make enough to replace your day job, or supplement your pension, and live a very good life just off of Facebook, right?

Facebook makes people millionaires from their traffic. So it’s not about the traffic. The traffic is there.

So why is it then that people still don’t succeed? Let’s imagine you could get all your traffic from Facebook, or Instagram, or Twitter or any of the other platforms – Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, etc. There’s so much, it’s ridiculous, it’s absurd.

So let’s take traffic out the equation. Then what are the other components of a profitable affiliate marketing strategy? Well, there are four main things… But I want to talk about one.

Traffic is the first of them. Then there are two other affiliate marketing tactics. But it’s the final one that most people don’t have… And that is…

A Profitably Converting Sales System

Now, I’m not talking like… Y’know, when I got started – or – when I actually started making money back in 2008/2009, you could just get an affiliate link from like Clickbank, or any of the other platforms.

I was mainly using Clickbank… And you could promote that offer, and you would get commissions on that first product that you were driving traffic to – and then the couple of upsells that would normally follow. But that would be it.

The thing is, back then, things were very different. Like, the cost of products was higher. Which meant you were able to get a higher commission. And you could get traffic cheaper and easier, because there wasn’t as much competition.

Today, things are very different though. The average cost of products has come down on the front end. Which means the commissions have been reduced. And although there’s a lot of traffic, it’s more competitive. Therefore the price is up.

The Best Affiliate Marketing Tactic For Today

And so what do you do then? What’s the best affiliate marketing tactic to use today? Well, you need what I call an ‘Ultimate Sales Funnel‘. But let’s not even talk about the ultimate sales funnel yet.

There’s one critical thing that you must now have to succeed. And that is the ability to make big commissions. What I mean by that is…

Take your average, normal sales funnel on Clickbank. It would normally consist of what’s called a front end product, and then probably two upsells – two or three upsells, right?

You get commissions on the front end, which might be about ten or twenty dollars maybe. And then on the couple of upsells. But now that’s no longer likely to be profitable using paid traffic.

So if you just promote a product off Clickbank with paid traffic, you probably won’t make a profit, right? Particularly in my industry at least. So what you need is… You need the ability to earn money by…

Making Sales And Commissions On Additional Purchases

Take me, for example. We have products that go anywhere from three thousand to eighteen thousand dollars.

Now, think about it. I could sell hundreds and hundreds of copies of those twenty dollar Clickbank products, in order to make, say, ten thousand dollars a month, right? Hundreds of them!

OR, I could sell one ten thousand dollar program. Where do you think the profit is? What’s the easiest affiliate marketing strategy? It’s in those high ticket sales and commissions, those premium products. And that’s what a business needs.

Y’know, I could literally hold a two or three-day workshop on that aspect alone. But I just wanted to plant that seed of thought in your mind, cos that’s the best affiliate marketing tactic to be using today.

So essentially, one of the things that you must have in your online business now, in this current economy, are premium products that pay you big commissions. Like four and five figure payouts per sale.

If you can get something that pays you four figures per sale, it’s going to allow you to profitably go out there and buy traffic on Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or any of the platforms. And be able to do so profitably. That’s the key to a successful affiliate marketing strategy today.

And y’know, when I look back… 2004 to 2008, I was in a hell-hole!

I Literally Could Not Figure This Stuff Out. Gosh, It Was Horrible!

And I remember… Aside from the buying and trying of everything and the debts I was in… If I think about my mindset back then, I used to honestly and genuinely… It sounds silly now… Some of you will either relate to this, or you’ll think I’m stupid…

In the position I am today, I think, “Wow! What a stupid broken mindset.” But back then, it was very real. It was my life. Back then I used to honestly and genuinely think that the position I was in… That hell-hole of debt… The position I found myself in, wasn’t my fault.

It was everyone else’s fault – it was the people selling the products – it was the marketers – it was the gurus. And I’ll be honest… Absolutely, there was a lot of crap – and there still is to this day. And it’s everything I stand against, everything I’m fighting against…

It’s What I’m Waging War Against – The Liars, The Cheats, The Thieves, The Scammers!

The people pushing endless get-rich-quick garbage onto unsuspecting victims like I used to be.

But the truth is this – I’m the one that bought into it. I’m the one that believed it. So who’s truly to blame? And when you look at it, you could say, “Well, misleading bad practices aren’t my fault.” You’re absolutely right. And I was duped by a lot of it, and I was naive and stupid.

But at the end of the day, there becomes a point where we all have to take responsibility for our actions. We all have to take responsibility for where we are at in our lives, and the decisions that we’re making.

If you choose to continue believing that stuff, like I once did… If I were to have stayed on that path, with that belief, I would not be here today. I would probably still be jumping from dead-end job to dead-end job, in tens of thousands of debt. Financially crippled, broken, financially broke position, with no positive prospects in my life.

How To Change Your Life For The Better

Only I could change that – and I could change that with decisions that I made. And where you’re at today, I want to say that no matter how you feel as of right now… I want you to know that you are where you’re at because of the decisions that you have or have not made.

And as much as that’s tough sometimes to swallow, because it’s never easy to see ourselves as the one to blame. It’s never easy to feel like we’re at fault… The reality is, when you wake up to that, and you OWN it… Things can change.

And they can change faster than you may even realise is possible right now. Believe me, I saw it happen. I went from four and a half years of debt and hell, to quitting my job in the space of nine months.

How did that happen? Yes – it happened because I got mentoring, yes – it happened because of the advice, yes – it happened because I took action. But it happened because I made a decision to change.

And y’know, as Tony Robbins says, “Change happens in a moment.” What takes time is getting ready for the change. And so I want you to realise that, and change your life for the better.

And I hope that – at least if I say that – I know I’m gonna piss off some people in saying that, cos they’re gonna say, “Well it’s not my fault I’m where I am.” I get that. But if what I’ve just said even helps one person watching this, it’s absolutely worth it.

The Blueprints For An Effective Affiliate Marketing Strategy

And I thought I’d just share a little bit about this with you. Like, “What are the steps? What are the areas you have to focus on, in order to build a business online?”

Now let me just share the background story behind this. Way back in 2004, when I was just discovering that people could even make money on the internet. It was like this big revelation. Of course, now it’s everything I live and breathe – it’s obvious to me.

But I have to go back to a time where I queried, “What are people doing online?” I thought it was just eBay. I thought the only way people made money online was to sell stuff on eBay.

Well anyway, I discovered affiliate marketing and I started trying and buying everything I could lay my hands on. And…

I Got Myself Into A Terrible, Terrible, Frightening Situation

…of being over $60,000 in debt. Having five credit cards, two bank loans and a minus $3,000 bank account overdraft.

And this is all by my mid-20s by the way. Like scary, scary stuff. So that continued… That horrific pattern of subscribing to email list, reading emails… Dozens and dozens of new emails and offers landed in my inbox every single day. Day after day, week after week, month after month.

And I was always buying new products. Most days I’d be buying something new. And these products would range from anywhere like fifty dollars, maybe a bit more, up to five hundred dollars. And then I would start buying more expensive stuff, like five thousand dollars!

That’s how the debts really continue to spiral out of control. Until the point where I had no control. And I was desperate, and I was buying everything because I was so desperate and so scared.

When I was in that position… When I look back… I was so lost. Lost in a sense of… Well, lost in many senses. But the ‘lost’ I want to talk to you about, and then give you the answer to is…

“What Do I Do? What Should I Be Focused On?”

I was putting in the time, y’know. A lot of people I see – they can’t even be bothered to switch off the TV at night. They have to watch TV instead of work on their business – instead of developing themselves and changing their lives.

Now I was putting in the time. My problem wasn’t the time. Because I was working a full-time day job AND working all the way through the night. Trying to build my own online business – trying to make money online.

And so, my problem wasn’t time – I was making time. My problem was not knowing what to do in the time I had. So I want to share with you what those things are that you should be focused on.

If you feel the same – if you have that feeling and you’re like, “I really just don’t know what to do, and what I should be doing.” If you’re spending more than an hour or two a day, and not seeing positive progress. Then you’re not focused on the right areas.

There’s actually four areas you need to have, and learn, and master, and focus on. Four things you need to have in place – four things you need to be doing for an effective affiliate marketing strategy. Whether you’re doing them yourself, or you’re outsourcing, or leveraging other people or existing resources…

Thing Number One… Traffic

None of us, whether you are an affiliate marketer promoting other people’s offers, or you have your own products… You cannot do it without traffic. You have to get people on the internet, through advertising for example, to web pages, okay? So traffic is number one.

Thing Number Two… List Building

When you’re driving traffic, you should be capturing those people onto your emailing list, okay?

Thing Number Three… Follow Up

When you’re driving traffic and building your list, you must be following up. Now ‘follow-up’ can come in many different shapes and sizes. I don’t obviously have the time to get into it here, but follow up when you’ve got their email address can be by email. Follow-up can also be through retargeting/remarketing campaigns and other means.

Thing Number Four… Sales Process

You have to have a sales system, right? You have to have offers you’re sending people to. Now again, that could be your own, it could be other people’s. Personally I think if you’re just starting out, you should be leveraging other people’s. But there’s a right and wrong way of doing that.

So to recap, an effective affiliate marketing strategy comprises…

1. Traffic
2. List Building
3. Follow Up
4. Sales Process

Now this could go in many different directions, but I have one specific thing in mind, based on something I’ve been seeing recently.

We host quite a lot of webinars here at Internet Profits. We do one particular webinar most weeks, whereby we open up places to our Certified Partner Program, when we have spaces that are available.

The Mindset To Be An Affiliate Marketer Online

Recently, I decided to go through an exercise. I download a tons of the chat histories that came in through the questions box / the chat box, from our webinars. And I started going through a lot of them, seeing if there’s any commonalities. Seeing if there’s anything that I’m not covering, or objections I’m not overcoming in our webinar, to see if I could improve upon it and make that better.

And I kept noticing something. Not all the time, but enough times for me to notice it.. It reminded me of myself years ago. And I realised looking back – obviously hindsight’s a wonderful thing. But the question always began with,

“What if…

• this doesn’t happen?
• that doesn’t happen?
• this is the outcome?
• that is the outcome, and I’m stuck?

Basically, all a negative leading ‘what if’. And it just kind of shows what’s in people’s minds…

“What if…

• this doesn’t work?
• it goes wrong?
• this isn’t what I’m being told it is?
• this doesn’t do that?

Negative leading ‘what if’ questions. And I used to be exactly the same – and I get it. I totally get it! Because you’ve tried a lot of things in the past. They haven’t worked out the way you hoped. Perhaps sometimes, that blame was on you because you didn’t stick at it long enough.

Learning From Past Mistakes Isn’t Enough

But perhaps as well, a lot of times, you feel that blame wasn’t on you. Perhaps you did follow the course thoroughly, to learn how to be a affiliate marketer. And perhaps you did implement everything step-by-step that was shown. And it did not work out the way that product owner sold you on it doing. It didn’t live up to expectations, ultimately.

And so now, over years of that happening, you are tainted with this negative leading, “What if this doesn’t work for me?” feeling.

Now the problem with that is, that whenever you lead like that, you’re actually expecting it not to work. And you will talk yourself out of a decision to move forwards, to learn how to be a affiliate marketer, because of past negative or bad experiences.

And whilst I completely agree that you should learn from your past experiences, and you should learn lessons from them. The BIG mistake that I see people making is – they will allow past experiences to stop them making potentially great decisions.

So I want to challenge you today – to not allow fear to consume you, and to prevent you from making what could well be a great decision. And instead, to turn it around and say this…

“What if…

• this DOES work?
• this DOES do what I’m being told it could?
• I DO get the results that others are getting with this?
• this DOES work out for me?

You see, those two ways of leading the ‘what-if’ questions, lead to dramatically different outcomes and perspectives right?

“What if this does do what I’m being shown?” Compared to, “What if this doesn’t work out for me?”

Are You Looking For An Opportunity To Think Negatively?

Now if you are, of course (like we do) backed up with strong assurances and guarantees. For example, if somebody’s giving you a 14 day money-back guarantee, or a satisfaction guarantee, or whatever that may be. Then you should move forwards, right?

You should not allow past negative experiences to stop you – especially when they’re risk-free! Now to you… you might think, “Well it’s not risk-free, because what if I don’t get my money back?” So again, you’re looking for the negative.

If somebody has a good reputation, and you’ve done due diligence, and you like what you see… Move forwards, and learn how to be a affiliate marketer.

Ask yourself, “What if this DOES do what I’m being shown it will?” “What if I DO succeed?” And then you go all-in, and you make it so.

And I thought, “I could do this. This doesn’t look hard, this doesn’t look tough.” So I started this process, where I would join forums and scroll through the articles, read internet marketing blogs, and be on social media, and all that kind of stuff.

Before long I start thinking, “Well, if I just buy this plugin… If I just buy this course, this ebook, or program… Then my life’s gonna change.”

Internet Marketing Guru Fakes, Liars And Thieves!

A lot of these programs were being sold to me in a way of, y’know, “Magic software creates cash-producing websites in three clicks of a mouse…” And I believed it all. Y’know, kind of naive now, right? I can look back and say, like, “What kind of idiot was I, to believe that type of stuff?”

But when it’s constantly rammed down your throat by so many internet marketing gurus, what else are you supposed to believe? If you take people on face value – on their word – then you would believe them, of course. Because none of us like to think people would be lying to us.

By 2008, I was in over sixty thousand dollars of debt, five credit cards, two bank loans, and a minus three thousand dollar bank account. All the while, nobody in my life even knew. My life was… In my day-to-day existence…

I Was So Scared, So Afraid, So Crippled With Fear

…that I had no idea what to do. And today, many years on, thankfully I’ve been able to turn that around.

Thankfully I got a mentor, and I learned the truth. I learned how to do things correctly. And now I’ve been helping hundreds and hundreds of others to follow in my footsteps – and build a business the right way.

But that’s not what this is about today. This is about today… A declaration of war against those internet marketing guru types that do that kind of BS stuff!

Affiliate marketing has often been touted over the years as the quickest, easiest way to start making money online. But is this still true? And what are the most significant affiliate marketing risks and challenges today? Dean dives into the major problems of affiliate marketing for beginners nowadays, and explains the main misconception that leads to the 98% failure rate in affiliate marketing today…

“Good morning. This is Dean Holland of course. Thank you for joining me here on today’s Drive, as we journey to Internet Profits HQ on this fine morning.

A little later in the morning than usual, almost 10:00 a.m. I was actually doing some live training at Internet Profits headquarters last night, until around about 1:30 a.m. So, bit of a late night last night.

But y’know, one of things that I continue to say is that, sometimes you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do. And last night was amazing!

I’ve been really working on my webinar ‘game’ – I’ve been really studying. And I’ve been learning so much about different topics, like copywriting, sales, persuasion, storytelling, And Facebook Ads is another thing I’m really diving into right now.

Last night, I got to host a webinar. Now, granted, there wasn’t that many people on there last night. It was, give or take, around about thirty-five people.

But I did a brand new presentation. And that presentation was to basically educate people on why affiliate marketing, as pretty much everyone knows it, no longer works the average person.

The Problems Of Affiliate Marketing For Beginners

You see, the only people it’s generally working for are those that sell their own products, have their own email lists of buyers, and can promote good, related, quality products to those buyers.

But what about the rest of the people? People tell me, “Dean, you’re crazy to say – to make that statement – affiliate marketing is dead.” I’m not saying it’s dead for everybody, I’m saying it is dead for the majority.

And I’m talking about… What about the the 98% that aren’t succeeding – that aren’t overcoming the risks and challenge of affiliate marketing? Why is it that affiliate marketing is still positioned and described as, “The easiest way for people to start out online…

“To be able to start getting traffic – do one or more forms of online advertising via Facebook Ads, Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, native ads, email buys…” Whatever it is, right? “Drive traffic to affiliate offers, make sales, get commissions.” Y’know. And, in between, there’s building an email list of those prospects, so you can follow up with them.

Now conceptually, yes, of course it works. But for the average person facing the problems of affiliate marketing today, what’s happened is – we’ve reached a kind of tipping point. A critical point, where the cost of online advertising continues to rise.

Affiliate Marketing Risks And Challenges

I have data and statistics from over the last ten years, that show the multiples that it’s increased by. Going from pennies per click, to dollars per click.

Yeah, I’m generalising here. Not being big headed at all, or bragging in any sense… But I’ve been in this game a long time, which gives me a unique experience level, and a unique perspective that a lot of people just don’t have.

And what I can tell you, and why I say this, is that… Not only has the cost of advertising risen dramatically, by multiples. But also, y’know…

I remember when I got started, the average front-end digital product in the affiliate marketing / make money online / home business industry was $77 to $97 dollars for an e-book!

Nowadays, you’ve got people putting out software products, video courses…

Full-Blown Programs… For Five To Ten Dollars!

Now that’s all well and good, but what does that mean? Well, the price has dropped, but the cost of advertising has gone up… When the price drops, the commission you get paid as an affiliate has to drop.

When we were being paid 50% commissions on a $97 front-end offer, we’re getting nearly 50 bucks commission, plus upsells.

Now that front-end offer, for that same product, is just $10 dollars. Even with a hundred percent commission, that’s still only ten dollars. When you balance that with the fact that the cost of getting the traffic’s gone up, but the commissions have gone down – you’re screwed, right?

Anybody that says, “Well Dean, you’re talking bullshit! I know people that are succeeding as an affiliate.” Yeah, maybe you do. But I bet you know many more that aren’t.

And it’s time… I’m waging war on this stuff! Like, I’m not taking any punches anymore. I am going all-in, you know. It’s time, not only that people were aware of these major problems of affiliate marketing…

Look, I’ve been one of those struggling affiliate marketers – it is awful! And what’s worst of all, is not knowing why. You’re putting in the time, you’re putting in the money, you’re putting in the effort… But you’re not seeing anything back. And you don’t have any idea why that is.

Well, I’m Done With It… I’m Waging War!

Because, not only did I have to go through this last decade to learn why… To be able to turn things around, and live the way I now live, and have the amazing ability that we now have to impact the lives of so many people.

But also, we built the solution… And I am really going all-out to get this into the hands of as many people as possible.

Because there still is a way left to succeed, without having to have all the technical experience to build the websites, create your own products… Without having to sell, and get on the phone, and y’know having to bug family and friends, and all that kind of stuff.
